Description
The Department of Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology/Haematology at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) provides the sole state-wide service in Western Australia for the diagnosis and management of children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. The unit is composed of a multi-disciplinary team, with medical and psychosocial expertise in providing holistic inpatient, same day and outpatient care for children and young people with cancer, malignant blood disorders, non-malignant blood disorders such as haemophilia, and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a continuum of care from diagnosis to outcome.
Clinical trials are embedded in childhood cancer treatment at PCH. These trials include front-line treatment for many types of childhood cancers, studies aimed at determining the underlying biology of these diseases, and trials involving new and emerging treatments, supportive care, and survivorship. This provides children and adolescents with cancer access to state of the art and cutting edge therapies, as well as advanced molecular testing. The Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology/Haematology Unit at PCH currently (as of September 2019) has 86 open clinical trials, including therapeutic (23 phase III, 26 phase I/II), 19 biology/registries and 16 late effects trials (which focus on long-term survivors).
